Our Students
Current
I enrolled at Open Access College at the beginning
of year 11 to try and accommodate my sporting and training
needs in track cycling. As I was training every day,
with multiple training sessions and travelling interstate
for competitions, it made it really difficult to maintain
face to face schooling.
Upon enrolling, I was immediately impressed with
the flexibility of the school framework and the lengths
the teachers and counsellors would go to facilitate
my needs. My teachers actually understood how important
my training was to me and gave me the odd very urgent
extension, so that I could go and compete somewhere.
As a result I won two gold medals at the National Track
Cycling Championships in Perth, while maintaining good
grades, successfully completing my year and moving into
year twelve.
If I had still been in face to face schooling, I
can’t see how I would have been able to balance
my sport, my school and my life. I doubt I would have
succeeded in everything.
I have come to learn that as long as you prioritise
your responsibilities, stay organised and stay focussed,
OAC can be a fantastic experience, allowing you to grow
and mature, ready to face the challenges that lie ahead
beyond your school years.

Past
In 2003, at the beginning of year nine, my continued
enrolment at a local high school became problematic.
However, I loved learning and knew I could be successful.
My parents sought every possible solution they could
think of until they found the Open Access College.
Although I sometimes struggle with social anxiety
I completed year 12 with a remarkably (to my surprise!)
high TER score. Thanks to the Open Access College’s
flexibility, I was able to do a year 12 subject in both
year 10 and year 11, which made year 12 much easier.
The patience and care of the wonderful teachers enabled
me to complete my schooling. I was able to do things
I loved, like writing and illustrating, while combining
them with my studies. In this new learning environment,
I could spend more time concentrating on school work
and by using my hours of free time to my advantage,
was able to skill myself in other areas in preparation
for university.
Open Access College offers alternative schooling
that can really benefit students. I am grateful to the
College and the teachers for helping me see that I have
something to offer this world
