On Thursday August 27 Senior Years students were invited to attend a Career and PLP Curriculum Day. A pleasing number of students and parents enjoyed the day which began with a very engaging presentation by Guide Dogs SA. I think we were amazed by the capability of the dogs and could sense the strong bond between owners and their dogs.
After the morning break Alan Williams, Apprenticeship Broker facilitated an engaging workshop on pathway options beyond school that are available as traineeships and apprenticeships. He provided an insight into school based apprenticeships.
Then it was time to break out into three groups. Dennis Shriner who is our Middle Years Counsellor facilitated the PLP group. This group was addressed by two former students who described their PLP experience, gave useful tips for completing work and shared PowerPoint presentations and entertained us with stories of their work experience. The 30 students who attended asked a range of questions which the students ably answered. Teachers were able to meet and talk to their students before lunch.
Parents attended a session on SACE completion and post school options which Darren Jones one of our Senior Years counsellors led while Jayne Andrews and Kate Young presented a SATAC information session for year 11 and 12 students.
After the more formal part of the day students, parents and teachers enjoyed lunch and the Career Expo.
There were many positive comments from students, parents and teachers on the day. For PLP students the week focused on Career and drew in work that is being undertaken with UniSA with My Career Match. The opportunity to speak to university, TAFE and business representatives was appreciated.
