Languages

The Languages learning area provides students with opportunity to learn a language additional to their first language and/or language used at home.

Learning languages

  • Extends the ability to communicate
  • Strengthens literacy development
  • Develops intercultural capability, and respect for diversity and difference
  • Enhances critical and creative thinking
  • Develops understanding of self, and how values and culture shape world view

Primary students at Open Access College learn Japanese from Reception to Year 6. Beyond this a range of subjects and language learning pathways are available. Languages is compulsory to the end of Year 8.

Some classes depend on enrolment numbers to proceed.

Expected prior learning and SACE Eligibility

  • Year 9 – Successful learning (C Grade or above) at Year 7/8 level is preferred
  • Year 10 - Successful learning (C Grade or above) at Year 9 level is strongly recommended. Year 10 language subjects build on assumed prior learning of the selected language at Year 9 level and prepare students to continue onto SACE Continuers Stage 1.
  • Continuers Stage 1 – successful learning (C grade or above) at Year 10 level or equivalent.
  • Continuers Stage 2 – successful learning (C grade or above) at Continuers Stage 1 level
  • Beginners Stage 1 – no formal prior learning within the past 24 months. Students may undertake Beginners Stage 1 subjects during Year 10.
  • Beginners Stage 2 – successful learning (C grade or above) at Stage 1 Beginner level.

*SACE Eligibility Forms are required for:

  • All Beginners Stage 1
  • Japanese and Indonesian Continuers Stage 1
  • New Japanese and Indonesian enrolments at Stage 2 Continuers

School groups can enrol in Languages to learn Chinese, French, Indonesian, Japanese or Spanish.
