VET in Action: Hands-On Learning and Career Pathways
Posted on August 28, 2025
National Skills Week (25th – 31st August 2025)
As part of National Skills Week, let’s take a look at the diverse opportunities available to students at Open Access College. In 2025 we have had over 50 students engaged in a range of Vocational Education and Training (VET) opportunities. VET is not just for the traditional trades; it encompasses hundreds of different occupations, professions and industries including accounting, retail, hospitality, technology and the arts.
VET Stackable Courses
Stackable VET includes short courses (Certificate I, skills sets and skills clusters) that give students pre-vocational skills. Students can explore different areas before progressing to additional training and pathway advancement through FIPs. These courses are available from Year 10. Open Access College has students enrolled in courses ranging from electronic music production to fashion to barista.
Polina is studying the Introduction to Make-Up at The French Beauty Academy
“So far I’ve enjoyed the hands-on learning at the French Beauty Academy. Being a Frenchie is super fun, and even the theory is helpful for a future career and very interesting. I hope to continue learning there for some time.”
VET Flexible Industry Programs
Flexible Industry Programs (FIPs) include Certificate II and Certificate III VET qualifications. These programs have been designed in partnership with industry to identify qualifications appropriate for school students and develop the skills, knowledge and competencies valued by employers. They provide an industry-endorsed pathway to entry level employment, better preparing young people for real jobs, and providing a pipeline of young skilled workers for South Australia’s growing industry sectors. These courses are available from Year 11.
In 2025, students at Open Access College are enrolled in courses in:
- Aeroskills

Sarah is studying a Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care at TAFE SA.

“Looking back on my journey, I’ve discovered a passion I didn’t even know I had. Childcare is about more than just looking after children; it’s about becoming a better person, treating others as equals, and supporting children in their learning journey. Children are naturally curious, and I believe we should be curious with them. Asking open-ended questions and really listening can lead to surprising insights.
The benefits I feel I’ve received in my VET course include the following.
- Providing a reliable job with qualifications after school
- Earning SACE credits
- Trying something new, really getting out of your comfort zone.
- Meeting others who are interested in the same subject.
A few topics we have dived into recently:
- Encourage understanding of aboriginal and /or Torres Strait Islander people’s culture
- Support inclusion and diversity
- Play/different types
- Provide care for Babies and Toddlers
- Support children to connect to the natural environment
Of all the subjects we’ve investigated, the play unit has been one of my favourites. This unit was particularly beneficial for my AIF, as I chose a topic that supports my future in childcare. Finding more information about the importance of play in early childhood development though my VET course emphasised how vital it truly is for children to play and the rights of each child.
While this is one topic I’m passionate about, there are so many other interesting subjects that expanded my knowledge. Overall, I am very grateful to have chosen a VET course while in school. It has paved the way for my future, helping me discover what I want to do and what I enjoy.”
Chelsea is studying a Certificate III in Screen and Media (Visual Effects) at Marden Senior College
“I have loved doing the Visual Effects VET course throughout the year; it has been so much fun being around people with similar interests, learning all the new programs, and it's given me so many opportunities to meet people within the industry, and I was even able to be on set for a feature film.”

School-based Traineeships and Apprenticeships
A school-based apprenticeship or traineeship allows for students in year 10 or above to combine their South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE) with vocational education and training (VET) and paid employment.
Elianna is studying a Certificate III in Sport and Recreation through a school-based traineeship where she combines the qualification with working as a lifeguard/swim instructor and completing SACE.
“I love the fact that I can combine my interests and my school journey, and that I get hands-on training and experience to support my future in the aquatics and recreation industry.”
Bow is studying a Certificate III in Wine Industry Operations through a school-based traineeship where he combines the qualification with working at a vineyard and completing SACE.

Celebrating Success in University Studies
We are thrilled to congratulate Year 12 students, Ekaterini, who has achieved a High Distinction in her university subject (Intermediate Modern Greek) while completing her SACE.
This remarkable result recognises her dedication, strong work ethic, and commitment to academic excellence. Balancing university-level study alongside her Year 12 workload is an impressive accomplishment.
“I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to pursue a university subject while still completing my SACE. The experience enabled me to extend myself and pushed me to think more critically and cultivate a more strategic learning approach. It also gave me a head start on uni life and expectations and I’m especially thankful to the college for being so supportive throughout the journey!” Ekaterini
Ekaterini is one of several students at Open Access College who are currently extending themselves through university courses as part of their SACE.
