Photography Incursion — Lights, Camera, Learn!
Posted on June 02, 2025
On the 6th of May, Stage 1 and 2 Photography students from Open Access College were invited to participate in an exciting, hands-on photography incursion that took their learning well beyond the classroom. With guidance from teachers who are professional photographers themselves, eleven students explored the art and science of photography across three key areas: outdoor photography, studio photography, and digital compositing using Photoshop.
This immersive learning experience was designed to offer a real-world approach to photography. Students received immediate feedback on their work and collaborated closely in pairs or small groups, sharpening their skills while also learning from one another. The incursion aimed to build both technical proficiency and creative confidence.
Outdoor Photography: Harnessing Natural Light and Environment
In the outdoor photography session, students embraced the challenges and beauty of shooting in natural settings. They learned how to work with the changing qualities of natural light, explored creative framing techniques, the rule of thirds and leading lines, and navigated environmental variables such as weather and movement in public spaces. Students with manual functions on their cameras were also taught how to work with the mechanics of the camera, such as aperture and shutter speed.
Back in the classroom, students shared a selection of their images and discussed the techniques they used to bring their visions to life—an opportunity to reflect and refine their approach.
Studio Photography: Creating Controlled, Professional Setups
Moving indoors, students stepped into the world of studio photography. Here, they had the opportunity to experiment with lighting setups, backdrops, and props. The incursion included hands-on activities like crafting coloured gels and DIY soft boxes, making professional-style equipment accessible to all.
With full control over the shooting environment, students explored how light direction, colour, and background choices can transform a photo. Collaboration remained key, as students supported each other in setting up shots and adjusting equipment.
Photoshop Compositing: Bridging Reality and Imagination
In the final part of the incursion, students dove into digital editing with Adobe Photoshop, focusing on compositing techniques. They learned how to layer and blend images seamlessly, add special effects like light flares and textures, and build imaginative scenes that extend beyond what the camera alone can capture.
The experience culminated in a mini exhibition where students presented their composite work to peers—an inspiring showcase of creativity, technical skill, and personal expression.
A Well-Rounded Experience
This photography incursion offered students a truly comprehensive journey through the creative process—from capturing the perfect outdoor shot to crafting studio still-lifes and transforming images through digital art. By the end of the program, students walked away with a deeper understanding of the possibilities that photography has to offer.
