Visit to Brukunga Mine

Brukunga Mines Mine Benching

On Friday the 1st of June, Stage 2 Earth and Environmental Science students from Open Access College and Marden Senior College participated on a joint field trip to Brukunga Mine.

The now closed Brukunga Mine presents an interesting case study in regards to a variety of concepts that the students have been studying, regarding human use of geological resources including their extraction, use and impact on the environment. Students conducted water quality tests at a variety of sites around the mine to determine the effect of the extracted minerals on a natural waterway and to determine the effectiveness of current remediation measures.

Students worked both independently and in groups to determine which water quality characteristics they should be testing for and where they should collect their water samples. The students will share their collected data to produce a scientific report on their findings.
