Who is this course for?

Students interested in any or all of the media forms we engage with for work, study or fun, such as TV, movies, music, video games and the ever-growing number of media we can access via the internet. Tasks suit those with abilities and vocational needs that are creative, analytical, and practical.
There is no assumed knowledge or prior learning required, however, the Stage 1 Media Studies course contains practical components that require access to media technology.
This course has a pathway to Stage 1 Media Studies B and Stage 2 Media Studies.

What will I learn

Through theory and practical tasks, you will explore the following topics:

  • Media and leisure – the relationship between leisure, entertainment and media, such as TV, movies, radio, music, and social media.
  • Community-based media – what role does the media play in the definition and formation of communities in the 21st century.
  • The news – how news is formatted across media platforms and the changing landscape for news, from linear (print, TV, radio) to online.

How will I be assessed?

  • Theory tasks (written and oral): 50%
  • Practical tasks (creating a community-based video or pamphlet, and a news features page for print or the web): 50%
