Who is this course for?

Students interested in any or all of the media forms we engage with for work, study or fun, such as TV, movies, music, video games and the ever-growing number of media we can access via the internet. Tasks suit those with abilities and vocational needs that are creative, analytical, and practical.

There is no assumed knowledge or prior learning required, however, the Stage 1 Media Studies course contains practical components that require access to media technology.

This course has a pathway to Stage 2 Media Studies.

What will I learn

Through theory and practical tasks, you will explore the following topics:

  • Advertising and Audiences - the relationship between advertising and other media, such as TV, radio and news services
  • Cinema Verite – the term means “cinema-truth” but can truth exist in any narrative-structured media form featuring non-actors, such as documentaries and so-called “Reality TV”?

How will I be assessed?

  • Theory tasks (written and oral): 50%
  • Practical tasks (creating a print, radio or TV advertisement or and a video, radio or web-based documentary): 50%
