Who is this course for?

Students who want an understanding of the Australian legal system, how laws are made and the administration of justice. Legal Studies provides a useful background for study in business-related fields such as law, commerce and finance and those seeking employment in a legal or business environment.

No background knowledge is assumed. Students should have good abilities in reading, writing and research skills.

What will I learn?

You will:

  • gain an understanding of the principles, structures and processes in the Australian legal system, constitutional government, how laws are made
  • define, research, analyse and evaluate legal principles and issues to make decisions about your participation in the legal system
  • Focus Area 1: Sources of Law
  • Focus Area 2: Dispute Resolution
  • Focus Area 3: The Constitution

How will I be assessed?

You will demonstrate your learning through the following assessment types:

School Assessment (70%)

  • Assessment Type 1: Folio (40%)
  • Assessment Type 2: Inquiry (30%)

External Assessment (30%)

  • Assessment Type 3: Examination (30%).
