Who is this course for?

This course appeals to students who possess a genuine interest in making meaningful contributions to society and shaping its trajectory through the application of mathematical approaches to the complex challenges of the modern world. It serves as a pathway towards Stage 2 Mathematical Methods and Stage 2 Specialist Mathematics, with the latter intended to be studied in conjunction with Mathematical Methods.

To enroll in this course, it is expected that students are either currently undertaking or have successfully completed Mathematical Methods A or an equivalent course.

Furthermore, a solid grasp of Year 10 Mathematics and Year 10 Mathematics Bridging, or their equivalents, is assumed as a prerequisite for this course.

Upon successful completion of this course with a grade of C or higher, students will fulfill the mandatory 10-point Numeracy component of the SACE.

What will I learn?

You will study topics that support your:

  • capacity to problem solve and apply your mathematical knowledge,
  • ability on how to approach new challenges by investigation, modelling and reasoning,
  • communication skills to describe the relationships observed in situations requiring mathematical reasoning.

Topics are:

  • Arithmetic and Geometric Sequence and Series,
  • Vectors in the Plane,
  • Geometry.

How will I be assessed?

Students will demonstrate evidence of learning through the following four assessments, each weighted as 25%:

  • three Skills and Applications Tasks,
  • one Mathematical investigation.
