Who is this course for?
This course is for students who are interested in photography, animals, character design and making. Students will explore how photographs and observations of animals can be transformed into creative characters and brought to life through puppet making and digital technologies.
What will I learn?
There are two connected areas of learning in this course:
- Photography and Animal Character Design
Students develop photography skills by capturing animals, movement, textures and details. They investigate animal behaviour and characteristics and use their photographs and research as inspiration to design an original animal character.
- Puppet Making and Expression
Students transform their character designs into puppets using a range of materials and construction techniques. They will explore how colour, texture, shape, materials and facial features can communicate personality, emotion and character. Students will experiment with different puppet-making techniques and consider how their choices help bring their animal character to life.
Students will also use digital tools to edit photographs, develop ideas, document their creative process and create digital outcomes such as animation or stop-motion.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment will be based on the Australian Curriculum: Visual Arts achievement standard, with students demonstrating their ability to explore, develop, create and evaluate ideas using visual arts practices and technologies.
Students will be assessed through:
- Weekly skills and exploration tasks
- Photography and animal investigation
- Character and puppet design development
- A major puppet artwork/performance
- Digital documentation and reflection of the creative process
