Who is this course for?

Are you curious about how patterns can be used in art to express ideas, identities and stories? Year 7 & 8 Pattern and Art is for creative students who love to experiment, explore and try new things.

You’ll explore how artists from different cultures and communities use pattern to tell stories, express identity and celebrate what makes them unique. Experiment with different materials, techniques and the elements and principles of art to transform simple ideas into bold, vibrant and meaningful patterns.

What will I learn?

  • Experiment with different media, techniques and compositions to create interesting and personally relevant patterns.
  • Plan your art-making in response to exploring the techniques and processes used in your own and other artists’ artworks.
  • Apply the elements and principles of art to create original artworks incorporating culturally inspired patterns.
  • Express personal identity and cultural connection through visual choices such as layout, colour, form and repetition.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment will be based on the Australian Curriculum: Visual Arts Achievement Standard.

You will be assessed through:

  • Weekly skills and experimentation tasks – explore, test, play and discover what different materials and techniques can do.
  • 2 major artworks – develop your ideas and apply your skills to create finished, original artworks.
