Who is this course for?

Interested in 3D design, CAD, product development or 3D printing?

This course is designed for students who enjoy designing, creating and problem-solving, and want to develop practical skills in Computer Aided Design (CAD) using Autodesk Fusion.

What will I learn?

You will learn how to take an idea from an initial concept through to a 3D model and physical 3D printed product.

Throughout the course, you will develop skills in:

  • Creating accurate 2D sketches and 3D models
  • Using Autodesk Fusion to design functional and decorative products
  • Developing and refining design ideas
  • Preparing CAD models for 3D printing
  • Understanding how 3D printers manufacture products
  • Selecting suitable materials for different designs
  • Applying the Design Process to develop a major product

You will build your skills through practical tutorials and design challenges before developing your own major 3D printed product.

Your completed designs will be 3D printed and posted to you, allowing you to see your digital designs become physical products.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is based on the Australian Curriculum Design and Technologies Achievement Standard.

Students will be assessed through:

  • Practical skill development in Autodesk Fusion
  • Completed CAD models and 3D printed products
  • Investigation and analysis of materials and 3D printing processes
  • A design folio for a major 3D printed product

System Requirements

Students require access to a Windows or Mac computer capable of running Autodesk Fusion.

As a general guide:

  • Windows: A modern Windows 11 computer
  • Mac: A supported recent version of macOS
  • Memory: 4 GB RAM minimum, with 16 GB or more recommended
  • An external two-button mouse with a scroll-wheel
  • A reliable internet connection is required for installation, updates and cloud-based features

Chromebooks and tablets are not recommended for this course.

Students should check the current Autodesk Fusion system requirements before enrolling if they are unsure whether their computer is suitable.

Pre-requisite

No previous CAD, Fusion or 3D modelling experience is necessary. Skills are developed progressively throughout the course.
