Do you have an excess amount of style? Are your clothing choices just a little more than something to wear? Have you ever looked at a questionable Hawaiian shirt and wondered whether it was a fashion travesty or a triumph?
Maybe you look at materials and wonder where they came from, what they could become, or why everyone keeps making such a fuss about polyester!
If any of this sounds familiar, 9/10 Fashion could be for you!
This course is designed for students who want to explore the world of fashion from fibre to fabric, trend to industry, and idea to garment. You’ll develop an understanding of textile and fabric production, explore how fashion trends have evolved over time, investigate the history and development of the fashion industry, and take your first steps into fashion design through the exciting world of upcycling.
And yes… you really do get to turn something old into something fashionable!
What will I learn?
- Upcycling: Transform a second-hand garment into something new and uniquely yours.
- Fashion Design: Explore the fashion design process, from initial ideas and inspiration through to creating a final product.
- Alternative Materials: Experiment with unexpected and sustainable materials to create fashion-based products.
- From Fibre to Fabric: Discover how fibres become textiles and fabrics, exploring production methods in both historical and contemporary contexts.

Fashion Through Time: Investigate fashion trends and discover how and why they change over time.
- Handicrafts & Culture: Explore traditional handicrafts from around the world and discover how these techniques, rooted in culture and tradition, can inspire contemporary fashion.
How will I be assessed?
Your assessment tasks will give you the opportunity to research, investigate, experiment and create.
- Textile Fibre Information Poster: Choose a textile fibre and create an engaging information poster exploring its origins, properties and uses.
- Handicraft Investigation: Investigate a handicraft of your choice, with three different options for how you can complete and present your assignment.
- Upcycled Garment & Folio: Transform a second-hand garment into a new fashion piece, supported by a folio documenting your ideas, experiments, design process and skills development.
