Who is this course for?

This course is designed to captivate students who have a keen interest in scientifically exploring the composition, structure, properties, and changes of matter, and who aspire to apply that understanding to benefit society and the environment.

Furthermore, this subject is particularly advantageous for students who possess a fascination with the dynamic interplay between human beings, science, and technology. Through the practical application of chemistry, students will develop a comprehensive appreciation for the factors that influence the pursuit of scientific knowledge and acquire the ability to make well-informed decisions regarding the modification and interaction with the natural world.

It is assumed that students enrolling in Chemistry B have recently completed Chemistry A or an equivalent course and possess a foundational knowledge of matter's structure and chemical bonding.

This course serves as an ideal pathway for students aspiring to pursue higher education in fields such as science, technology, mathematics, or TAFE.

What will I learn?

You will:

  • apply science inquiry skills to design and conduct chemistry investigations, using appropriate procedures and safe, ethical working practices,
  • obtain, record, represent, analyse, and interpret the results of chemistry investigations,
  • evaluate procedures and results, and analyse evidence to formulate and justify conclusions,
  • develop and apply knowledge and understanding of chemical concepts in new and familiar contexts,
  • explore and understand science as a human endeavour,
  • communicate knowledge and understanding of chemical concepts, using appropriate terms, conventions and representations.

Topics:

  • Mixtures and Solutions
  • Acid and Bases
  • Redox Reactions

How will I be assessed?

Students will complete four assessment tasks with a weighting of 25% each:
  • one Practical Investigation,
  • one Science as a Human Endeavour Investigation,
  • two Skills and Applications Tasks.
