- Discover the science behind cooking and find out why ingredients and techniques create different results.
- Explore food like a designer by analysing dishes and discovering what makes a food experience successful.
- Experiment, taste, tweak and improve your ideas through hands-on cooking trials.
- Learn how to balance flavour, texture, presentation and the senses to create a memorable food experience.
- Explore food-related issues such as sustainability, ethics and responsible food choices.
- Develop your own food design from an initial idea through to a finished creation.
- Learn to problem-solve, make adjustments and evaluate your results like a food designer.
How will I be assessed?
- AT1 Kitchen Skills – Build your confidence in the kitchen through practical tasks, developing safe food handling, preparation, time management and workflow skills. You’ll document your progress with photos, annotations and short evaluations.
- AT2 Part A – Investigating and Analysing a Dish – Put on your food-designer hat! Explore an existing dish and investigate how ingredients, techniques, flavours, textures, aromas and presentation work together.
- AT2 Part B – Design Brief Development and Planning – Turn your ideas into a food design. Develop a design brief for a particular user, purpose or dining situation, plan the sensory experience and create a realistic plan for your dish or menu item.
- AT1 Feast for the Senses Skills Task – Get experimenting! Practise and test the skills you’ll need for your final dish, using trials, photos and reflections to show how you improve, solve problems and make decisions.
- AT2 Feast for the Senses Solution Realisation – Bring your design to life! Create your final dish or menu item, document the making process, respond to feedback and evaluate how successfully your creation meets your user, purpose and sensory goals.
Across the course, you’ll build a product record using photos, video, annotations, sketches, recipes and reflections to show your ideas, experimentation, problem-solving and progress.
