Who is this course for?

Interested in 3D design, product development, engineering or 3D printing?

This course is designed for students who want to develop practical skills in Computer Aided Design (CAD) using Autodesk Fusion, a professional 3D modelling and design application.

It is suited to students who enjoy designing, creating and problem-solving, and provides useful foundation skills for future pathways in engineering, industrial design, manufacturing, construction and related trades.

No previous CAD experience is required.

What will I learn?

You will learn how to take an idea from an initial concept through to a professional 3D model and physical 3D printed product.

Throughout the course, you will develop skills in:

  • Creating accurate 2D sketches and 3D models
  • Using a range of CAD modelling tools and techniques
  • Producing professional technical drawings
  • Creating realistic renders and product presentations
  • Measuring and recreating real-world objects using CAD
  • Applying the Design Process to develop and improve products
  • Preparing models for 3D printing
  • Designing products that can be physically manufactured

You will work through a series of practical tutorials and design challenges that gradually build your skills in Autodesk Fusion.

You will then apply these skills to design and model your own CAD product, with selected designs 3D printed and posted to you so you can see your digital design become a physical product.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment Type 1: Specialised Skills Tasks - 40%

Develop and demonstrate your CAD skills through:

  • CAD Modelling and Technical Drawing
  • Advanced Modelling Tools and Rendering

Assessment Type 2: Design Process and Solution - 60%

Plan, design, develop and model your own CAD product, with the final design prepared for 3D printing.

System Requirements

Students require access to a Windows or Mac computer capable of running Autodesk Fusion.

As a general guide:

  • Windows: A modern Windows 11 computer
  • Mac: A supported recent version of macOS
  • Memory: 4 GB RAM minimum, with 16 GB or more recommended
  • An external two-button mouse with a scroll-wheel
  • A reliable internet connection is required for installation, updates and cloud-based features

Chromebooks and tablets are not recommended for this course.

Students should check the current Autodesk Fusion system requirements before enrolling if they are unsure whether their computer is suitable.

Pre-requisite

No previous CAD, Fusion or 3D modelling experience is necessary. Skills are developed progressively throughout the course

Cost

Students are provided with access to the required CAD software. 3D printing of selected course work is also provided.
