Who is this course for?

Interested in robotics, electronics, coding, 3D printing or creating automated systems?

Students will explore the design and construction of electro-mechanical products while developing practical skills in Arduino programming, electronics, CAD, 3D printing and automation.

The course provides useful foundation skills for future pathways in Electrical and Mechanical Trades, Computer Science, Robotics, Automation and Engineering, including Mechatronics Engineering.

What will I learn?

You will learn how to design, build, program and test your own electro-mechanical products.

Throughout the course, you will develop skills in:

  • Arduino programming using C++
  • Designing and troubleshooting electronic circuits
  • Using sensors, motors, displays and other electronic components
  • Computer Aided Design (CAD)
  • Designing and manufacturing parts using 3D printing
  • Simulating and testing electronic circuits
  • Combining mechanical, electronic and programmed systems
  • Developing, testing and improving your own designs

A major part of the course is designing and constructing your own electro-mechanical product.

Previous projects have included autonomous vehicles, automated pet feeders, alarm systems, electronic safes, digital scoreboards and other student-designed inventions.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment Type 1: Specialised Skills Tasks – 30%

  • Arduino Programming – 15%
  • CAD and 3D Printing – 15%

Assessment Type 2: Design Process and Solution – 70%

  • Investigation, Analysis and Design Development – 20%
  • Final Product – 20%
  • Product Record and Evaluation – 30%

Pre-requisite

None required. Previous experience with Arduino, electronics or CAD is helpful but not required.

Cost

Most equipment and components are provided. Some additional materials or specialised components may need to be sourced depending on the individual project a student chooses to create.
