Who is this course for?

This course is for students who are curious about how artists and designers work and want to explore, research and learn from a range of practitioners. You’ll investigate different ideas, experiment with materials and techniques, develop your own visual ideas and learn how to document, refine and reflect on your creative process.

What will I learn?

  • Discover and investigate artists and creative practitioners and what makes their work unique.
  • Explore ideas and meaning and how artists make creative decisions.
  • Experiment and take creative risks with different materials, techniques and approaches.
  • Turn your ideas into original artworks, from first spark to finished piece.
  • Document and share your creative journey through your folio and visual investigations.
  • Reflect, refine and evaluate your ideas, choices and finished artwork.
  • Build confidence discussing your own art and the work of others.

How will I be assessed?

You’ll explore, experiment and create through three assessment tasks, each showing a different part of your journey as an artist.

1. Folio – Explore, Experiment & Develop

Your folio is the behind-the-scenes story of your artwork. Collect inspiration, research artists, experiment with media and techniques, sketch and develop ideas, solve creative problems and plan your final artwork. Show how your ideas grow and change through drawings, experiments, photographs, annotations and reflections.

2. Practical – Make It Happen!

Turn your ideas into a final resolved artwork using the skills, materials and techniques you have explored. Your artwork could include drawing, painting, photography, digital art, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, textiles, mixed media, animation, film or installation.

For a 10-credit subject, you’ll also complete a Practitioner’s Statement explaining your ideas, influences, creative choices and process.

3. Visual Study – Investigate, Experiment & Discover

Become an art detective! Explore a range of artists, practitioners, styles, ideas, media and techniques. Research and analyse artworks, experiment with what you discover and use it to develop your own visual thinking and practical skills.
