Who is this course for?

Students interested in the fundamental processes in nature. The study of Physics provides an understanding of the processes which determine the behaviour of systems from the very small (atoms and nuclei) to the very large (the solar system and the universe).

What will I learn?

You will:

1. apply science inquiry skills to design and conduct physics investigations, using appropriate procedures and safe, ethical working practices

2. obtain, record, represent, analyse, and interpret the results of physics investigations

3. evaluate procedures and results and analyse evidence to formulate and justify conclusions

4. develop and apply knowledge and understanding of physics concepts in new and familiar contexts

5. explore and understand science as a human endeavour

6. communicate knowledge and understanding of physics concepts, using appropriate terms, conventions, and representations

Topics

The three strands of science to be integrated throughout student learning are:

  • science inquiry skills
  • science as a human endeavour
  • science understanding

The topics for Stage 2 Physics are:

  • Topic 1: Motion and Relativity
  • Topic 2: Electricity and Magnetism
  • Topic 3: Light and Atoms

Students study all three topics. The topics can be sequenced and structured to suit individual groups of students.

How will I be assessed?

You will demonstrate evidence of your learning assessed as Stage 2 through the following assessment types:

  • at least three Skills and Application Tasks - 40%
  • at least two practical investigations and one investigation with a focus on science as a human endeavour. - 30%
  • two-hour external examination - 30%

A total of eight assessment tasks with an extra SAT or Folio to make up the number of tasks.
