Who is this course for?

Students gain insight into, and understanding of, advanced mathematical tools that will them in pursuing careers in pure and applied mathematics, engineering, physics and other natural sciences. computer science, surveying, economics and commerce.

It is assumed that students taking this course have a high level of achievement at Stage 1 Mathematics Methods and Specialist Mathematics, or equivalent courses.

The course is taken in conjunction with Stage 2 Mathematical Methods.

What will I learn?

You will study topics that support your:

  • capacity to problem solve and apply your mathematical knowledge.
  • ability to decide on how to approach new challenges using investigation, modelling and reasoning.
  • communication skills to describe the relationships observed in situations requiring mathematical reasoning.

Specialist Mathematics requires a high degree of ability in algebra, trigonometry and reasoning.

  • Integration Techniques and Applications
  • Rates of Change and Differential Equations

How will I be assessed?

You will demonstrate evidence of your learning through the following assessment types:

  • Six Skills and Applications Tasks: 50%
  • One Mathematical Investigation: 20%
  • One Examination: 30%

Stage 1 Mathemematics Methods and Mathematics Specialist or equivalent

Cost

It is recommended that students have their own Graphics Calculator Casio fx-9860G AU plus or the latest fx-CG 50. Travel and any associated costs to attend any recommended workshops are the responsibility of the student.
